Focusing on the positive - why you need to!

Focusing on the positive – why you need to!

A key aspect in building your ideal life is how you achieve what you want to create. If you perceive what you wish to do in a negative way, or question your ability to achieve it, then it is important you recognise and address this.

If you doubt yourself and speak about what you want as if it is unlikely, then you are undermining your self-confidence. You are also ensuring that those around you will also be unsure. After all, how can they have confidence in your intentions if you don’t?

It’s important that when you want to achieve change, and you have a goal that you want to achieve, you believe you can achieve it.

Focusing on the positive - why you need to!

Focusing on what you want

Your attention and your energy tend to go where you focus your mind and your thoughts. So, if your thoughts focus on the negative, that is where your attention and your energy will also go.

Focusing on the positive, not listening to the negative options, keeping it clear where you want to go, and disregarding any negative thoughts around it, is essential to keep yourself moving forward.

It is as if you are walking on a path in a forest that leads to your positive goal. Negative thoughts are distractions – flowers or different side paths along the way. If you focus on them too much, you may move off the path you are on onto another, which serves no purpose for you.

Where your attention goes, so does your energy

For example, you might know someone who always believes that the worst is going to happen, and who keeps being able to provide evidence their position is true. They can do this because each day they look for examples to validate their view of the world.

Unfortunately, when there is potential to turn a situation around, they may not see it or reach for it as they are convinced it will never happen anyway. Their conviction, and where they place their attention, leads to the outcomes that validates their thinking. It is a negative loop driven by their focus on seeing only the negative around them.

What we focus on each day is a choice for each of us. I believe that we have more power to create and control our own future.

Create your own luck

I believe that creating the kind of life you want has a lot to do with the level of belief, planning, and readiness to act when opportunities arise. It comes from a combination of knowing what you want in life, trusting your intuition, and believing that you can succeed. By focusing on the positive you create your own luck.

Visualise the goals you want to achieve or the ideal life you want to have. It is worth taking the time to pause and reflect on how you describe your usefulness to yourself, as positive thoughts and feelings translate into positive behaviour and actions.

I do not suggest you make statements that you cannot relate to, instead start with turning “I can’t” or “I’m afraid” into “I can” and “I am and I will” statements.

Final thoughts

No matter what the situation is, it will never help you to focus on the negative. Keep focused on where you wish to go, believe you can, and you will reach that destination. Remember you are your own champion, believe in yourself and others will too. Contact us if you would like help with building your self-belief and thinking positive.

6 reasons why leadership development fails

Have you ever noticed that every place you go, group you join, or employer you work for, has unspoken ‘rules’ about how things are done? Sometimes you can even notice them at the very beginning.

Change your perception by changing the words you use

Change your perception by changing the words you use

There is a difference between your perception of reality and what others see. The way you perceive reality, which is shown through the language you use, comes from you and shows the viewpoint of how you see the world. The positive thing about this is it is a relatively easy thing to monitor (or have others help you to) and to change.

Setting goals – why you need to

Setting goals are vital because they help you decide and focus on what’s really important to you. If you don’t know what you want to accomplish, you can’t create a plan to get there. Setting goals is the equivalent of picking which path to follow to reach your desired destination.

What are questions anyway?

You can use questions to help you decide what you want and how you want to achieve it. You can also use them to communicate more effectively in all your relationships. Active listening and effective questioning are two key skills that will serve you well in all relationships.

How everyday actions impact leader credibility

As a leader, your word is what you live by. It’s a way for you to outwardly express your values and attributes. By role-modelling the behaviours you wish your employees to display, which are linked to your beliefs, builds real relationships that can achieve real change.
